BAZ LUHRMANN Biography
Mark Anthony Luhrmann, better known as Baz, was born 17 September 1962 in Sydney Australia. He is a well known director, screen writer an producer most recognised for his Red Curtain Trilogy (further information surrounding the Trilogy following). Luhrmann is known for his eccentricity within films, a few trademarks are his use of bright distinct colors, fast paced editing and contemporary music in films set in the pre-20th/21st century.
Luhrmann has worked behind the camera and in front, on stage and off, and this experience has been a great influence on his work. Graduating from NIDA in 1985 and having been involved in many stage productions since, Luhrmann has always had a flair for the dramatic. His films taking on a theatrical quality that is more expected to be on the stage than on screen, however his unique and distinctive style has led to great success. He is a visionary and while we see his successes he is known to have said "all the films I make are about 60% of what I imagine them to be." however this has not prevented him having been nominated for numerous rewards along with receiving a multitude also. Luhrmann's mother was a ballroom dancing teacher, and himself danced ballroom as a child therefore his influence for Strictly Ballroom was inspired from a childhood spent doing just that. He is also known to have been influenced by Italian Grand Opera and Bollywood films, stating that they have had a major impact on his style.
