This blog is dedicated to NCEA Level Three Assessment 91491 - Demonstrate understanding of the meaning of a media text through different readings - better known as Auteur Study.
The Task:
You will choose a director who has directed three or more films and/or documentaries (hereafter referred to as texts). View two or more of their texts and complete the tasks.
Part 1. view at least two texts and make notes on distinctive elements of film language that the director uses. these might include: mise-en-scene, soundtrack, montage.
Analyse the way the director uses three distinctive elements of film language to communicate meaning to their audience.
Part 2. Analyse two different readings of ONE text and support your comments with examples.
The director I have chosen is Baz Luhrmann and I will be looking at his most famous works known as 'The Red Curtain Trilogy' which is comprised of (as you can see in the above image) 'Strictly Ballroom' (1992), 'Romeo + Juliet' (1996) and finally 'Moulin Rouge' (2001). My readings will be on the latter, Moulin Rouge, in which I will be analysing the film through the perspectives of genre and gender.

Why did I choose Baz Luhrmann?
Since I was a kid I have been watching Baz Luhrmann's films. My Father brought Strictly Ballroom home one day and my sister and I were hooked. Then came Romeo + Juliet, which I watched and studied in English, I would say of all of his works this would be my least favourite. When we first watched Moulin Rouge it freaked us out majorly but then a couple of years later my sister and I tried it again and completely fell in love with it, the music, the costume, the everything.
I have always really enjoyed his films and having known them for a while pushed me in the direction. His eccentricity and unique style is also something that will be interesting to look into, there's a lot to work with. Another reason why I chose Luhrmann was the fact that there is a lot of information available through the school and therefore I can hopefully do this to the best of my ability.
